MyDigital ID age checks considered to block under 16s on social media, says Teo

19+ hour, 6+ min ago (273+ words) KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is considering requiring social media firms to use MyDigital ID to block users under 16 from opening accounts, says Teo Nie Ching. The Deputy Communications Minister said the government and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission are discussing age verification with major platforms. "The current proposal is to use MyDigital ID as one of the tools to verify users" ages," she said. "We will discuss this further with platform providers to ensure users under 16 do not have social media accounts," she said in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Nov 24). She was replying to Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) on enforcing online age restrictions. Teo said similar requirements are being rolled out overseas, including in Australia from December, using different age assessment methods. Earlier, Teo said the commission received 2,937 network quality complaints nationwide from Jan 1 to Nov 20 via the…...

SMG posts RM47.9mil revenue in 3Q25

5+ hour, 33+ min ago (357+ words) PETALING JAYA: Star Media Group Berhad recorded a revenue of RM47.9mil for the third quarter ended Sept 30, 2025 (3Q25), down 20% year-on-year (y-o-y). The decline was mainly due to the completion of the Star Business Hub development project in 2Q25, which resulted in lower contributions from the property development and investment segment in the latest quarter, SMG said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia. Its print, digital and events segment also recorded lower revenue of RM41.4mil, as compared to RM44.6mil in 3Q24, primarily due to lower advertising income as the segment continued to be impacted by softness in advertising spend. As a result, the group registered a loss before tax of RM3.6mil in 3Q25 as compared to a profit before tax of RM3.1mil in the same period a year ago. The radio broadcasting segment's revenue fell 17% to RM6.4mil in 3Q25 due to softer advertising spend. The group said that during the quarter, operating…...

Amazon pushes in-house AI coding tool Kiro over competitors', memo shows

14+ hour, 6+ min ago (403+ words) Tuesday, 25 Nov 2025 SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Amazon suggested its engineers eschew AI code generation tools from third-party companies in favor of its own, a move to bolster its proprietary Kiro service, which it released in July, according to an internal memo viewed by Reuters. In the memo, posted to Amazon's internal news site, the company said, "While we continue to support existing tools in use today, we do not plan to support additional third party, AI development tools." "As part of our builder community, you all play a critical role shaping these products and we use your feedback to aggressively improve them," according to the memo. The guidance would seem to preclude Amazon employees from using other popular software coding tools like OpenAI's Codex, Anthropic's Claude Code, and those from startup Cursor. That is despite Amazon having invested about $8 billion into…...

Villages galvanised by kinship

9+ hour, 45+ min ago (955+ words) Tuesday, 25 Nov 2025 A SENSE of common purpose and community is transforming two villages thanks to a local initiative in Shah Alam, Selangor. The Sedulur Sekampung programme is a multi-pronged effort by Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) councillor Muhammad Nabil Norhalim in Zone 11, which comprises Kampung Jalan Kebun and Kampung Lombong. Muhammad Nabil, who realised the area needed vast improvements when appointed in February 2023, explained that sedulur was a Javanese term meaning "brotherhood, and conveyed the spirit of community. He added that nearly 80% of the over 45,000 residents in the two villages were of Javanese descent. The programme was designed to clean up the area, legalise local businesses and promote local tourism, aiming to fix the contrast between the villages" status as a food haven and their previously littered streets.
